That split mirrors the UK market for research peptides: some compounds can be sold for research, while others are medicines that no research label can cover.

What counts as a research peptide in the UK market

A research peptide is a compound that is not a licensed medicine and is sold for laboratory research without medical claims. In the UK, that status rests on the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, which class a product by its intended use.

Promoting a peptide that can be used for treatment of injuries, mental function, or metabolism means that it has to be treated like a medicine requiring a license. If it is marketed as research substance with reference to research, it escapes the classification of a medicine. The MHRA investigation of clinics in UK dealing with peptides in April 2026 hinged on this very principle.

Just putting a label on something is not enough. The MHRA states that "research use only" and "not for human consumption" labels do not make the product lawful for human consumption, nor does this indicate that it meets specified medical standards.

Certain peptides marketed online as "research" products can be considered as medicines. Retatrutide is the most obvious example: the MHRA has made it clear it is not approved for any therapeutic use in the UK.

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) and semaglutide (Wegovy) are licensed prescription-only medicines. A seller of research peptides avoids the medicine regulations because of its omissions. Regulators on both sides of the Atlantic examine the complete website instead of just the part that applies.

• No treatment claims: no promises to heal, repair, cure or improve any condition.
• No usage guidance: the FDA treated dosing guidance and reconstitution calculators as evidence of intended human use.
• No injection kits sold alongside: bacteriostatic water next to injectables was cited by the FDA.
• Published testing: a third-party certificate of analysis for each batch.
