Unlicensed Weight-Loss Peptides in the UK: What the MHRA Says
Is retatrutide legal UK-wide? The MHRA says it cannot be supplied outside clinical trials. Its enforcement raids, trial results and the lawful routes.

On 27 August 2026 the MHRA told The Pharmacist that retatrutide "has not been authorised for medicinal use in the UK" and cannot be legally supplied outside ongoing clinical trials. That is the whole answer to "is retatrutide legal in the UK" for anyone thinking of buying it: there is no lawful way to buy it, whatever the label or the seller says.
Retatrutide is the most discussed of the off-label weight loss peptides, so this page uses it as a primary example. Here we explain the current state of retatrutide, what the MHRA is doing about illegal supply, and what legal options there are now. Please note that we do not provide sellers and the price of retatrutide.
Retatrutide's legal position in the UK
Retatrutide is a medicine still undergoing trials and has not been approved in any country worldwide. In the UK, Eli Lilly also confirms that Retatrutide has not been approved, and that it is not possible to obtain the treatment via any lawful channels.
Retatrutide is a drug that is administered as an injection once a week and it works primarily on three hormone receptors, including glucagon, GLP-1 and GIP. By comparison, the drug tirzepatide (Mounjaro) works on two of these receptors and semaglutide (Wegovy) on one hormone receptor. While both tirzepatide and semaglutide have been approved in the UK, retatrutide still remains unapproved in the UK.
On 23 July 2026 Lilly said it plans to submit retatrutide to the US FDA in the first quarter of 2027. No MHRA submission date has been announced, so "retatrutide legal UK" remains a no for the foreseeable future.
MHRA enforcement against illegal weight-loss injections
The Criminal Enforcement Unit of the MHRA takes action on a routine basis against those supplying retatrutide products illegally. The raids have discovered thousands of dosage units of the various weight-loss drugs including retatrutide.
| When | Where | What was found |
|---|---|---|
| October 2025 | Northampton | Illegal manufacturing of weight-loss medicines |
| February 2026 | Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire | Illegal manufacturing of weight-loss medicines |
| May 2026 | Northamptonshire | Illegal manufacturing of weight-loss medicines |
Over the past year, the MHRA intercepted 28.5 million doses of illicit products that are worth around £64.4 million in the market. They caution that products sold unlawfully do not have verified content, manufacturing methods or management.
Why "research peptide" retatrutide is still illegal supply
A research label does not change retatrutide's status, because the MHRA says such labels do not make a product legal to supply for human use. This is the key difference between retatrutide and research compounds such as BPC-157.
BPC-157 is not a licensed medicine and is sold as a research compound; it becomes a problem when sellers make medical claims. Retatrutide is different. It is an investigational medicine that the MHRA says cannot be legally supplied outside trials at all. We set out the general rule on are peptides legal.
US regulators take a similar view. On 24 August 2026 the FDA sent warning letters to five online peptide vendors for selling unapproved new drugs, and retatrutide, semaglutide and tirzepatide were among the products named.
What the trials show, and why that is not a licence
Trial results explain the demand, but they do not make retatrutide available. In TRIUMPH-1, presented in June 2026, participants in the highest dose arm lost an average of 28.3% of body weight at 80 weeks. In TRIUMPH-3, adults with severe obesity and cardiovascular disease lost on average 21.6% to 22.6%, against 3.2% on placebo.
The same trials recorded side effects. In TRIUMPH-2 and TRIUMPH-3, diarrhoea affected roughly 24-34% of people on retatrutide against 9-13% on placebo, and nausea roughly 14-28% against 6-8%. Urinary tract infections were described as a new safety signal in TRIUMPH-1. Lilly describes most events as mild to moderate.
The findings were derived from studies conducted under medical supervision using known quality products. A container from an unregulated provider presents both uncertainties.
The lawful routes: trials and licensed medicines
There are two lawful routes for people in the UK, and only one involves retatrutide itself.
- Clinical trials. Taking part in a trial is the only legal way to receive retatrutide in the UK today. Search the NIHR "Be Part of Research" service and ClinicalTrials.gov for trials recruiting in the UK.
- Licensed medicines on prescription. Mounjaro and Wegovy are licensed for weight management and are prescription-only. NICE recommended tirzepatide for obesity, and since 1 April 2026 GP practices can prescribe it under the GP contract, though availability varies by area. Privately, they must be prescribed and dispensed by a pharmacy registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council, which you can check on the GPhC online register.
A seller offering prescription-only weight-loss injections without a prescription is a red flag, as are social media sellers, bank transfer or crypto payment, and unlabelled pens or vials. Report suspected illegal sellers to the MHRA, and use the Yellow Card scheme for side effects. If weight is a health concern for you, speak to your GP.
